Simple answer….swing slower and turn your front foot forward to the target. Try it, I was having a heck of a time with bad knee and it helped my balance.
I will give you a quick tip that will allow you to deal with this matter.
Get over your ball, and take your normal stance. Now, pretend someone directly behind you calls your name. When you leave your feet planted where they are, turn as if to speak to him behind you and that is the action that should take place with the initial turn of the waist/knees.
The transition from back swing to follow through requires a lot of torque in the hips and lower back… Its my opinion that your chronic back problem is the culprit, not a set up problem.
Many professional golfers (ie. Freddy couples) suffer from back problems, many hang up the cleats…
You need to make a conscious effort to rehab your back off the course, and hopefully that will improve your game in the long run.
On another note, I see many older men (obviously less flexable in the lower back regions) make half swings, or not follow through all the way. Maybe its just an age thing you’ll have to deal with.
The important point is that you’re outdoors, and giving it a shot.
